How to Knit Stitch (k) in Knitting

Knitting is a wonderful craft that involves creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn with knitting needles. If you are new to knitting, learning the basic stitch is the first step to creating all kinds of knitted items, from scarves to sweaters.

The knit stitch, often abbreviated as "k" in knitting patterns, is the most basic stitch in knitting. It creates a smooth, "v" shaped stitch on the right side of the fabric, and a row of bumps on the wrong side.

Here's how to do the knit stitch:

1. Hold the knitting needle with the cast-on stitches in your left hand, and the empty needle in your right hand. The yarn should be hanging down from the last stitch on the right-hand needle.

2. Insert the right-hand needle into the first stitch on the left-hand needle, going from front to back.

3. Bring the yarn around the right-hand needle from back to front, crossing over the two needles.

4. Using the tip of the right-hand needle, pull the loop of yarn through the stitch on the left-hand needle, creating a new stitch on the right-hand needle.

5. Slip the old stitch off the left-hand needle, letting it drop down behind the new stitch.

6. Repeat steps 2-5 for each stitch across the row, until you reach the end of the row.

7. To start the next row, switch the needles so that the needle with the stitches is in your left hand, and the empty needle is in your right hand. The yarn should be hanging down from the last stitch on the right-hand needle.

8. Repeat steps 2-5 for each stitch across the row, until you reach the end of the row.

9. Continue repeating steps 7-8 to create a piece of knitted fabric.

Remember, practice makes perfect! Don't worry if your first few rows don't look perfect – with a bit of practice, you'll be knitting like a pro in no time. Happy knitting!
