Basil Sherbet: A Refreshing Ottoman-Inspired Recipe

We present you with a delightful sherbet recipe that traces back to the Ottoman cuisine, offering a refreshing taste. Made with fragrant fresh basil leaves, this homemade basil sherbet is both irresistible and healthy.

Ingredients for Basil Sherbet Recipe:
- 1 bunch of fresh basil
- 1 lemon
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 6 cups hot water

Preparation of Basil Sherbet:
- Place the torn fresh basil leaves in a bowl by hand.
- Slice the lemon lengthwise and add it to the bowl. You can also add the lemon in slices if you prefer.
- Sprinkle 1/2 cup of granulated sugar over them, and knead the basil leaves, lemon, and sugar until the sugar is completely dissolved. This way, the essence of the basil leaves will be well extracted.
- After the sugar has dissolved, pour 6 cups of hot water over the mixture, give it a gentle stir, and let it cool with the lid on. We used a bowl and covered it with a pot lid. You can also use a regular pot for this.
- For this basil sherbet recipe, there's no boiling involved. We're simply allowing the basil and lemon mixed with sugar to infuse in the hot water.
- Once it's cooled down to room temperature, strain the sherbet.
- Keep it in the refrigerator until it's thoroughly chilled.
- Serve it cold, and enjoy!

Note: We didn't add additional spices like cinnamon, cloves, or ginger to fully capture the flavor of the basil. However, you can optionally add cinnamon, cloves, or ginger according to your taste. You can also adjust the sugar amount to your preference.

The basil sherbet, with its bright red color, is particularly refreshing for the summer months. As you can see, there are only four ingredients for the basil sherbet recipe. The key element here is the basil. This sherbet is specific to Ottoman cuisine, and we followed the original recipe closely, preparing it in a way similar to the sherbet recipes used in the Ottoman era, where sugar and herbs were kneaded into a paste. This way, you'll experience the rich flavor of basil in the sherbet.
