Hello everyone and welcome to my knitting blog! In today’s tutorial, I’ll show you how to knit neat buttonholes that are especially suitable for big buttons. I’ll also share a great tip on how to create smooth and even edges for your cardigans, vests, and any other knitting projects.
To start, I used 11 stitches to demonstrate the edge technique with garter stitch. As you knit each row, don’t knit the last two stitches. Instead, bring the working yarn to the front and slip the last two stitches onto the other needle without knitting them. On the next row, knit those two stitches tightly. Repeat this process every row—this simple trick gives you beautifully uniform and firm edges.
Now, let’s move on to creating buttonholes! I left four stitches on both ends and worked the buttonhole in the center. For a large buttonhole, I bound off three stitches by knitting two together, transferring the stitch back, and repeating this step two more times. This gives you a clear, clean space. On the next row, cast on three new stitches where the gap is. Make sure these added stitches aren’t too loose.
If you want smaller holes, bind off one or two stitches. For larger holes, start with more base stitches (e.g., 13 stitches) and bind off four or five stitches. The technique is flexible and works for any button size or placement.
This buttonhole method is simple, effective, and works beautifully with smooth edges. I hope you give it a try in your next project. Thank you for visiting, and see you in the next tutorial!
