Hi everyone! Welcome back to my channel. In today's crochet tutorial, I'm excited to share how to create this beautiful corner-to-corner baby blanket. The stitch we'll be using is a variation of the suette stitch, which involves alternating single and double crochet stitches. It creates an amazing texture and is reversible! To complete the blanket, we'll add a simple five-round border. The finished size is approximately 24x24 inches (61x61 cm), making it perfect for a baby's Moses basket, buggy, stroller, or car seat.
Materials You'll Need:
- Yarn:
- 1 ball of Sirdar Snuggly Patter Cake (Sweet Dreams shade 754) - This soft yarn is specially made for baby skin and is 70% acrylic and 30% nylon.
- 1 ball of Stylecraft Special Double Knit (White shade 1001) for the border - A light worsted weight yarn, 100% premium acrylic.
- Crochet Hook: Size H/5mm
- Scissors
- Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
- Stitch markers (optional, but helpful, especially for beginners)
- Kitchen scale (optional, for self-striping yarn cakes)
Helpful Tips Before You Begin:
- If using a self-striping yarn cake, weigh it before starting. You'll use just under half the yarn for the main section and the remaining half for the second section.
- When using a yarn cake, pull the yarn from the center to prevent tangling.
Let's Get Started!
Main Section:
- Row 1: Chain 2. Work 2 single crochets into the second chain from the hook. (2 stitches)
- Row 2: Chain 1, turn. Increase in the first stitch (1 single crochet, 1 double crochet in the same stitch). Place a stitch marker in the single crochet of the increase. Increase in the last stitch. (4 stitches)
- Row 3: Chain 1, turn. Increase in the first stitch. Single crochet in the next stitch, double crochet in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * across to the last stitch. Increase in the last stitch. (6 stitches)
- Row 4 (and all following increase rows): Chain 1, turn. Increase in the first stitch. Single crochet in the next single crochet, double crochet in the next double crochet. Repeat from * to * across to the last stitch. Increase in the last stitch.
Repeat Row 4 until the width of your blanket measures 21 inches (53 cm) or until you've used just under half of your yarn.
Decrease Section:
- Row 1 (and all following decrease rows): Chain 1, turn. Single crochet two together (decrease) over the first two stitches. Double crochet in the next double crochet, single crochet in the next single crochet. Repeat from * to * across to the last two stitches. Single crochet two together over the last two stitches.
Repeat Row 1 until you have 4 stitches remaining.
Final Row: Chain 1, turn. Single crochet two together over the first two stitches. Single crochet two together over the last two stitches. Fasten off.
Border:
- Round 1: Join your contrasting yarn in any corner. Chain 1. Work 2 single crochets in the corner, chain 2, 2 single crochets in the same corner. Single crochet evenly along the side. Repeat from * to * around all four sides, working the corner sequence (2 single crochet, chain 2, 2 single crochet) in each corner. Slip stitch to join.
- Rounds 2-4: Chain 1. Half double crochet in the first stitch. Half double crochet in each stitch around, working 2 half double crochet, chain 2, 2 half double crochet in each corner. Slip stitch to join.
- Round 5: Chain 1. Single crochet in the first stitch. Single crochet in each stitch around, working single crochet, chain 1, single crochet in each corner. Slip stitch to join. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Congratulations! Your beautiful corner-to-corner baby blanket is complete.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
